Washington, Feb 10: In a bold political move, Indian-American urologist Dr. Anil Kumar has announced an independent run for the US House of Representatives from Michigan’s 11th Congressional District. With the seat opening up after Haley Stevens decided to contest the US Senate elections, Dr Kumar says this is a rare opportunity to challenge what he calls a broken healthcare system, failing education standards, and the sidelining of Indian Americans in mainstream US politics.
A practicing doctor for decades, Kumar says his decision was shaped by what he witnessed firsthand in hospitals. Despite the US spending trillions on healthcare, patients are unable to afford basic medicines, he says. Education is another major concern — as an elected member of the Board of Governors at Wayne State University, he warns that a large section of American students struggle with basic math and language skills. Having earlier run three times as a Democrat, Kumar now says both major parties seek Indian-American votes but hesitate to give them leadership roles.
Calling the current moment historic, Kumar pointed out that nearly 45% of Americans now identify as independents, creating space for new voices. Proud of his Indian and Hindu roots, the Jaipur- and Mumbai-raised doctor urged Indian Americans to step up politically, not just economically. “We are successful, but success without unity is fragile,” he warned, urging greater grassroots participation and funding. As one of America’s fastest-growing communities still underrepresented in power, Kumar’s independent bid is being closely watched by Indian Americans across the US.
