Washington, Feb 10: Indian-American community leader Ashok Baddi has announced his bid for the Michigan House of Representatives, saying he wants to bring practical, people-first leadership to the fast-changing suburbs north of Detroit. Baddi will contest from Michigan’s 56th District, a diverse constituency where nearly 25 per cent of residents are of Indian origin — a factor he believes could be decisive in the election.
A longtime resident of Troy, Baddi said his campaign is rooted in grassroots community work and years of political involvement. Though earlier associated with the Democratic Party, he said his core values now align more closely with Republicans, particularly on education and social issues. Education remains central to his pitch, with Baddi strongly opposing moves to eliminate honours programs in local schools, arguing that students should be encouraged based on individual merit and ability.
Originally from Hyderabad, Baddi immigrated to the US in 2005 and later settled in Michigan after spending years in rural America. He is challenging Democratic incumbent Sharon McDonald, citing unmet expectations on infrastructure and education. Calling for greater political participation and funding from Indian Americans, Baddi said the community’s growing numbers must now translate into real political influence as the closely watched 56th District race heats up.
