Anupam Kher: Success in US, but heart in India

Veteran actor Anupam Kher has spoken about the emotional struggles of Indian immigrants in the US, saying that behind their professional success often lies loneliness and a strong sense of nostalgia for India. During his ongoing theatre tour across America, Kher said many first-generation Indians have built successful lives and seen their children thrive, but still remain deeply connected to their homeland. He described their journeys as stories worthy of films, filled with struggle, sacrifice and achievement.

Kher said his theatre production explores loneliness, relationships and the experiences of three generations, with humour, music and emotion helping audiences connect with the subject. He believes theatre offers a unique bond between performers and viewers, especially after the isolation of the Covid-19 pandemic. His tour has also given him an opportunity to travel across the US with his team and interact closely with members of the Indian diaspora.

The actor also highlighted India's cultural diversity, family values and tolerance as qualities that continue to inspire him. While appreciating America's professionalism, infrastructure and systems, he said Indian cinema and theatre have become important tools of India's cultural influence abroad. Kher further noted that technology and AI can transform communication, but cannot replace genuine human connection, encouraging young artists to remain original and authentic.
