KA bans Selfies, Reels on Academic Tours

Academic tours in Karnataka are getting a strict new rule — students can travel, learn and explore, but no selfies or reels! The Karnataka College Education Department has directed Government First Grade Colleges across the state to prohibit students from taking selfies, recording videos and making social media reels during academic tours.

As per a circular issued by the Commissioner’s Office, colleges must obtain prior permission before organising any academic tour and submit tour proposals along with undertakings from students and parents. Students must also be briefed about the rules before departure. Lecturers accompanying the students have been asked to closely monitor them and ensure that nobody visits places outside the approved itinerary. The department has also put special emphasis on the safety of girl students, with principals and accompanying lecturers being held responsible in case of any untoward incident.

The crackdown comes amid several accidents linked to risky selfie and video attempts. Recent incidents in Karnataka include a Bengaluru businessman who died after approaching a wild elephant for a selfie, medical interns who drowned while taking selfies near strong water currents, and youngsters injured or killed while filming near dangerous locations.
